PROCEDURE 1. Organization - Greetings. - Who’s absent today? 2. Check the old lesson 3. New lesson: Warm up: Ask sts play game: Jumbled words: versetimanet → advertisement eef → fee swne → news sasecenry → necessary restetni → interest Pre - writing: - T gives the request and introduces the situation. - Ss read the letter. T introduces the words and phrases. - Teach the new words and use R.O.R for checking. - T asks some questions about the letter. Ss answer. - Which words does Jonh use ? / What is it about? - Does he require informations about detail, fee ? While - writing: - Have students read the letter written by John Robinson on page 37. - Ask them work in pairs to answer some questions about the letter. * Questions: a. Where did Robinson see the school’s advertisement? b. What language does he want to learn? c. What aspect of Vietnamese does he want to improve? d. What does Robinson want to know? * Answers: a. He saw the school’s advertisement in today’s edition ....... b. He wants to learn Vietnamese. c. He wants to learn to read and write Vietnamese d. He wants to know some details of the courses and fees. * Matching: - Give students four parts of a letter of inquiry. Keys: a. Introduction b. Request c. Further information . d. Conclusion - Ask students to divide the letter (written by Robinson) into 4 parts and match each paragraph with a suitable headline. - Let students word in pairs compare their the answer. *Answer keys: a. I saw your school’s advertisement in Introduction: today’s edition of the.............. b. Request: I saw your school’s advertisement in today’s edition of the ................. c. Request: I am interested in learning Vietnamese end’s I like some information about your school. d. Father information: I speak little Vietnamese, but I want to learn read and write it. Could you please send details of courses and feed? I can complete a spoke.......... e. Conclusion: I look forward to hearing from you. Post - writing: - Ss write the other letter, use the advertistment in part read. V. CONSOLIDATION Review the main conten of the lesson. VI. Skills: Reading, listening , writing . 3. Attitudes: - Positive about their lesson. - Students know how to learn English. - Ss are interested in doing exercises. 4. Competence a. Hoa: Yes, I am / No, I am not. T: (2) Do you like cold weather? Hoa: Yes, I do / No I don’t. Check: Who’s cold? (The teacher is) *Practice: 1. Modal verbs with if: - Ask Ss look at the text book and repeat the grammar of the lesson. Exercise 1- p.38: Complete the sentences. Use the modal verbs in brackets and the information in the box. - Ss give the modal verbs ( Can/ shall/ should/ could/ might/ may ...) Ex : A : My grade is terrible . B : If you want to get good grade, you must study hard. Direct and Indirect speech: - Ask students to report what the examiner asked Lan and what Lan said. a. “Where do you come from?” → The examiner asked Lan where she came from. b. “Do you speak any other languages?” → The examiner asked Lan if she spoke any other languages. c. “I’m studying English here.” → Lan said she was studying English there. Form: a. S + asked + O + WH-word + S + V ...... ( → Reported WH-questions.) b. S + asked + O + IF/WHETHER + S + V .....( → Reported Yes/No questions.) c. S + said + (that) + S + V ...... ( → Reported statements ) Exercise 2- p.39: Complete the table: Changes: When we change a direct into reported speech, we must change: Tenses Adverbs of time and place Direct speech Reported speech Direct speech Reported speech 1. Present simple → past simple this/these → that/those 2.Present progressive → past progressive here -> there 3. Future simple → would + V (bare) now -> then 4. can/may → could/would today -> that day 5. must → had to tomorrow -> the following day Note: Pronouns : I → She/He ... my → her/ him .... we → they ... Exercise 3- p.39: Reported Statements: - Ask students to play the role of Lan, report statements given to her grandmother. - T models : ‘ I’m happy to see you ’(Aunt Xuan) → Aunt Xuan said she was happy to see you. - Students work in pairs. Give feedback and correct *Keys : a. Uncle Hung said that birthday cake was delicious. b. Miss Nga said she loved those roses. c. Cousin Mai said she was having a wonderful time here. d. Mr Chi said he would go to Hue the following day. e. Mrs Hoa said she might have a new job. f. Mr Quang said he had to leave then. Exercise 4 - p.39: Reported questions: - Set the scene: This morning Nga had an interview for a summer job.When she arrived home, she told her mother about the interview. - T models: a. “Do you like pop music?” → She asked me if I liked pop music. b. “ Where do you live?” → She asked me where I lived. - Ask students to work in pairs to change the direct question into reported ones. *Keys: a. She asked me how old I was. b. She asked me if/whether my school was near there. c. She asked me what the name of my school was. d. She asked me if/whether I went to school by bicycle. e. She asked me which grade I was in. f. She asked me if/whether I could use a computer. g. She asked me why I wanted that job h. She asked me when my school vacation started. V. CONSOLIDATION - Repeat the main point of lesson - Ask Ss to remember VI. HOMEWORK - Do exercises again - Prepare the next lesson : Unit 5 : Getting stared + Listen and read.
