Lesson 4: Reading
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Get more information about the natural disasters in the world.
- Ask and answer questions about the text.
- Vocabulary: tidal wave, abrupt, shift, funnel-shape, tornado
- Grammar: present simple .
2. Competence: Communication, co-operation, self-learning capacity, creative
capacity
3. Quality: studious, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: Reading and speaking.
B. Preparation
- Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, flashcards, laptop, loudspeaker, projector.
- Students: Textbook, notebook, pen
B. Procedure
I. Warm-up: Matching:
- Show 4 pictures P74 and ask students to match them with four words:
snowstorm, earthquake, volcano, and typhoon.
* Chatting:
- How do you know it is a snowstorm/ earthquake/ volcano/ typhoon?
- Have you ever seen any of these natural disasters? What happen? How did you
feel?
II. Pre-reading
1. Pre – teach vocabulary
- tidal wave (n): sóng thần (translation)
- abrupt (adj): đột ngột (synonym)
- shift (n): sự dịch chuyển (definition)
- warn (v): cảnh báo (translation)
- funnel-shaped (adj): hình phểu (visual)
- suck up (v): hút, cuốn theo (translation)
- tornado (n): lốc xoáy (explanation)
* Check: R-O-R
2. T/F Statements Predictions
There are 6 statements about the information of some natural disasters. Ask
students to guess whether they are True or False.
1) Most of the earthquakes in the world occur in the Ring of Fire.
2) The earthquake in Kobe in 1995 caused severe damage.
3) A huge tidal wave traveled from California to Alaska and hit Anchorage in the
1960s.

4) Typhoon, hurricane and tropical storm are different words for the same natural
disasters.
5) The eruption of Mount Pinatubo is the world’s largest ever volcano eruption.

blocks and highways collapsed

movement of the earth.

6) A Tornado is a type of storm that passes overland below a thunderstorm and
suck up anything that is in its path.
IV. Post-reading
* Group work:
- Ask students to work in group to answer the questions:
1) Why do people call the Pacific Rim “Ring of Fire”?
2) What will happen when there is an abrupt shift in the underwater movement of
the earth?
3) What does “typhoon” mean?
4) Can we predict a volcano?
V. Homework
- Learn by heart the new words
- Read the text again
- Prepare for the next lesson.

Lesson 5: Writing
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- write a story about a typhoon using those phrases structures and tenses above.
- Vocabulary: behave, shelter, all of a sudden, perfect, scared
2. Competence: Communication, language using ability, self-learning capacity,
creative capacity
3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: listening and writing
B. Preparation
- Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, flashcards, laptop, loudspeaker, projector.
- Students: Textbook, notebook, pen
B. Procedure
I. Warm – up: Jumbled words:
-otnophy = typhoon
-damotro = tornado
-lacono = volcano
-tearquahke = earthquake
-ormst = storm
II. Pre-writing
1. Pre – teach vocabulary
- behave (v): đối xử, cư xử (translation)
- shelter (n): chổ ở, chổ ẩn náu (definition)
- all of a sudden (IDM) =suddenly (synonym)
- perfect (adj): hoàn hảo (translation)
- scared (adj): sợ hãi (situation)
Check: What and Where
2. Telling the story: (Show 6 pictures on the board.)
-Set the scene: This is Lan’s family, they are at home.
Ask students to elicit the story.
Picture 1: Who is this? Where is she? What is she doing?
Picture 2: How is the dog?
Picture 3: What’s on TV? What does Lan’s mother say?
Picture 4: What are they doing?
Picture 5: What’s the weather like now?
Picture 6: What’s the weather like now? How are they now?
- Ask students to look at the picture to retell the story in English.
III.While-writing
- Have students write a story individually using the cues in the books/P79.

Note: Past tenses
- Teacher goes round and helps.
Sample:
It was a beautiful day. The sun was shiny, the sky was blue and the weather was
perfect. Lan was outside playing with her dog, Skippy. All of a sudden, the dog
began behaving strangely. She kept running around in circles. Lan ran home with
her dog to tell her mother what Skippy was doing. Lan’s mother, Mrs. Quyen
told Lan that there was a typhoon coming. Mrs. Quyen gathered her family and
told them to find shelter in the house.
Suddenly, the sky became very dark. The storm came with strong and heavy rain.
Mrs. Quyen and her family were scared, but soon the storm finished and
everyone was glad. What a clever dog Skippy is. She saved Lan from being
caught in the typhoon.
-Get students to share with their partners.
IV. Post-writing
- Correction: Teacher takes some writing to correct in the class.
- Ask students to rewrite their writing into the notebooks.
- Collect students’ papers to correct at home.
V. Homework
- Learn by heart the new words
- Revise the writing
