UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL
Lesson 2: Speaking
A. Aim
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to introduce themselves and respond
to the introduction.
- Teaching aids: textbook, posters, pictures

B. Procedure
I. Warm – up
T asks Ss some question
1. Where is Maryam come from?
2. Does she like Vietnamese people?
3. Does she like Ha Noi?
- Ss answer individually (base on the information of Listen and Read section)
II. Pre – speaking
1. Matching: (poster)
- T introduces the situation of the dialogue and gives the task.
- Have Ss work in pairs and put the order of the dialogue correctly.
- Get Ss to read their answers and T corrects if necessary.
- T hangs the correct order dialogue on the board.
2. Role – play:
- T reads the dialogue twice
T -------------Ss --> Ss -------- T
Ss ------------Ss (closed pairs --> open pairs)
III. While – speaking

- Have Ss look at part b) (P8) and ask who Maryam’s friends are and where
they are from.
- Ask Ss to make similar dialogues after reading carefully the characters that
they will play.
- T models the first dialogue
- Ss can change the information if necessary.
Model:
You : Hello, you must be Yoko?
Yoko: That’s right, I am.
You : Nice to meet you. Let me introduce myself. I’m ..
Yoko: Pleased to meet you, . Are you one of Lan’s classmates.
You : Yes, I am. Are you enjoying your stay in Viet Nam?
Yoko: Oh, yes. I like Vietnamese people and love old city in Viet Nam.
You : Do you live in city?
Yoko: Yes, I live in Tokyo, a busy big capital city.
You : I see.
- Ask some pairs to present their dialogues
- Ask Ss to practice with their partners.
IV. Post – speaking
- Have Ss make other similar dialogues.
- Ask Ss to practice the dialogues with their friends
V. Homework
- Learn the expressions for introducing ourselves.
- Prepare for listening + LF1,2

A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Students will be able to listen to the dialogue and
choose correct answers.
- Teaching aids: Loudspeaker, pictures, posters

- Grammar: Past simple tense
B. Procedure
I. Warm – up: chatting
T asks some questions
Should we walk on the grass?
Do you like eating hamburgers?
II. Pre - Listening
Set the scene: Tim Jone’s Mexican pen pal, Carlo is visiting the USA.
T asks to look at the pictures and answer the questions:
What is she doing in picture a1?
What is she doing in picture a2?
What is the number of the bus in picture b1?
What is the name of the restaurant in picture a1?
- Ss answer individually
- Teacher writes down the answers on a poster.
- T divides class into four groups.
- Ss guess what they do in the visit.
III. While- Listening

- T asks Ss to look at the pictures and listen to the Loudspeaker twice.
- T asks Ss to check their own prediction.
- T asks Ss to compare their answers with friends.
- Ss listen to the Loudspeaker one more.
- T calls some Ss to answer in front of the class
- T gives feedback and key: a1, b2, c2
IV. Post – listening: Language focus 1, 2
- Have Ss review past simple tense
- Call some Ss write the form of past simple tense and examples on the
board.
* Have Ss practice in groups of four to do exercise 1(P11 textbook)
- Ask practice in groups to make some similar dialogues
* Have Ss do language focus 2
- Get some Ss write the answers on the board.
- T corrects if necessary.
V. Homework
- Do exercises in workbook.
- Prepare for reading
* Loudspeaker transcript
Tim: Are you hungry, Carlo?
Carlo: Yes.
Tim: Let’s go to a restaurant downtown. If we go through the park, we can
catch a bus on Ocean Drive.
Carlo: That’s fine. I really like walking in the park. You’re lucky enough to
have a place like this near your home. It’s so beautiful with all the trees
and flowers and a pond in the middle.
Tim: Carlo, be careful. You’re walking on the grass. The park keeper is
growing some more – you’ll kill the new grass!
Carlo: Oh, sorry. I didn’t see the sign.
Tim: Come on. It’s time we caught the bus.
Carlo: Is that our bus, Tim?
Tim: No, that’s a 103 bus. We want the number 130
Carlo: Where are we going to eat?
Tim: It’s up to you. There’s a new Mexican restaurant in town.
Carlo: Oh, no. I can eat Mexican food at home. I love American food. I’d
rather eat hamburgers.
Tim: Okay. I know exactly where we need to go
