UNIT 4: LEANING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Lesson 5: Writing
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to write a letter of inquiry to the
institution for more information about the courses and fees
+ Lexical items: request, express, edition, fee
+ Grammar: could you +V, look forward to + V-ing
- Teaching aids: tape, poster, extra board
B. Procedure
I. Warm – up: Check – up
- Get some Ss go to the board and do their homework
- T comments and gives marks
II. Pre- writing
1. Set the scene:
How to write a letter of inquiry to the institution requesting for more
information about course and fees
2. Pre-teach vocabulary
- request (v): yêu cầu= ask for (synonym)
- express (v): biểu lộ, bày tỏ (explanation)
- edition (n): ấn bản, bản in (realia)
- fee (n): chi phí (explanation)
3. Recall the use of some structures:
To look forward to + V-ing
Could you + V
- Introduce the headings of the outline of a formal letter
- Introduction: body part: request, further information, conclusion
- Ask student to read the letter written by John Robinson

SS find the outline of a formal letter work in group
III. While – writing
- Have Ss read the three advertisements on page 36 again and ask Ss to
choose the schools they want to attend to improve their English.
- Get Ss to write a letter of inquiry to the institution requesting for more
information about the course and fees basing on the letter of Robison
- Ss have to compare with their partners and correct the mistakes
- T moves around and corrects some writing.
IV. Post – writing
- T hangs the poster of the model on the board and asks Ss to compare
with their writing and copy in their books
Model:
Dear Sir,
I saw your Institute’s advertisement on Today’s TV program. I am very
interested in learning English and I would like some more information
about your Institute.
I can speak English a little but I read it very slowly and my writing is
terrible. Therefore, I want to improve my reading and writing skills. Could
you provide more information about the length of the course and fees for
beginners? I can supply my record of English study if necessary.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

A. Aims
After the lesson, students will be able to use modal verbs with “if”, direct
and reported speech
+ Lexical items:

B. Procedure
I. Warm up: Network

1. Modal verbs have ss work in group
Recall modal verb with if and its form
If + S + present simple tense, S + modal verb + V-infinitive
S + modal verb + V-infinitive if + S + present simple tense
2. Direct and reported speech:
- Recall how to change direct statements and direct questions into
reported speech.
- Give some examples
III. Practice
Exercise 1:
- Ask students to do exercise 1 in pairs and compare their answers
- Ask some students to give their answers before the class
- Check and give feedback

Ask some pairs to practice the dialogue before the class
Exercise 2: Grid – fill
- Students practice in pairs and compare their answers
- Ask students to stick pieces of paper about correct answers on the table
- Ask students to read and teacher check and give feed back
Exercise 3:
- Ask students to do exercise 3 individually and compare their answers
with each other.
- Ask some students to give their answers before the class
- Check and give feed back.

IV. Production: Transformation drill
- Ask students to divide the class into 2 groups.
Gr1: Say direct statements Gr 2: report them
Ex: I’m tired – she said she was tired
V. Homework:
- Write exercise 3, 4 (p 29-30) in the books.
- Do exercises in workbooks
- Prepare well for test.
