Son Tien Secondary School Lesson plan of English 8 Period 4th Planning date: 13/09/20 UNIT 1: LEISURE ACTIVITIES Lesson 3: A closer look 2 A. Aims By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to use the verbs of liking that are followed by gerunds and use the verbs of liking that are followed by to - infinitives - Teaching aids: cassette & tape - Skills: reading, writing, speaking - Grammar: Gerunds and to infinitives after verbs of liking B. PROCEDURES 1. Warm up: Chatting - What leisure activities do you often do in your free time? - What are your hobbies? - Do you like listening to music? - Do you like to listen pop music or folk music?(etc) Let’s find out some more verbs of liking to express the degree of liking. 2. Vocabulaty adore (v): tôn thờ don’t mine (v): không ngại detest (v): ghét cay, ghét đắng fancy (v): thích 3. Grammar Verbs of liking + gerunds Verbs of liking + to-infinitives If we want to follow a verb with another action, we must use a gerund or an infinitive. 1. Remind Ss of the concept of the gerund from A CLOSER LOOK 1. Ask them how the gerund is formed and how it functions grammatically. Draw Ss’ attention to ‘love to watch’ and ‘ enjoy listening’ which appear in the text in GETTING STARTED: + I love to watch him... + But I think I’ll enjoy listening - Explain that in English if we want to follow a verb another action, we must use a gerund or an infinitive. There are certain verbs that can only be followed by one or the orther, and these verbs must be memorized. - Read or play the recording in GETTING STARTED for Ss to listening and ask them to underline the verbs of liking followed by gerunds or to-infinitives that they find in the text. For a more able class, T may ask Ss to cover the text and just listen to identify these verbs. Tell Ss that verbs of linking/disliking are often followed by gerunds, but verbs such as love, like, start, and prefer may go with gerunds or to-infinitives with almost no change in meaning. - Give some examples for both cases. Encourage Ss to give their own examples. - Introduce Ss to the Learning tip box, where they can differentiate the difference in terms of degree these verbs of liking/ disliking. 2. Ss work individually and then compare the answer with their partners. Then play the recording for Ss to check their answer. followed by gerund only followed by both gerund and to-infinities 1. love 2. enjoy 3.detest 4.prefer 5. fancy 3. Ss work in pair to complete this task, then T gives feedback to Ss as a class. Key: 1.making 2.to watch/watching 3.skateboarding 4.to learn/learning 5.sitting 5. Have Ss quickly familiarize themselves with the e-mail by asking: Who wrote this e-mail? To whom? What is it about? Have Ss scan the e-mail to find the answer. a. Ss work individually and compare their answers with a classmate b. Ask Ss to read the e-mail again and answer the questions. Key: - The activities Duc mentions in his e-mail is: playing video games, watching TV, going to the part, playing football, helping his parents, doing homework, and eating out with his family. - The two activities he enjoy the most are playing football with his friends, and eating out with his family 4. This task can be done in group of five or six. Give Ss time to work individually at first and write each sentence on a strip of paper, then in their group mix up the strips. Each student picks up and reads out a sentence, then they guess who write that sentence. 6. Ss work individually to write the e-mail(using their writing from exercise 4) then exchange it with partners and check for mistakes. If there is time, have them ask and answer about the e-mail afterwards, using the questions in 5b as a guide. If there is not enough time, this task can be done as a group-writing task. III. Aims By the end of the lesson ,students will be able to read and understand the article and practice by using them to do exercises - Skills: Drill reading , speaking and writing mainly - Teaching aids: loudspeaker, textbook, poster B. Procedure I. Warm up: Game: Building up - SS list the leisure activities they take part in in their free time one by one in two teams. Which team gets more activities is the winner. - Get ss to give their opinions about the activity they do. - Asks SS to find some activities a bit unusual and talk about them to the class then talk about what they think about them. II. Learning about the website on internet. 1. Extra vocabulary window shopping(n): đi chơi ngắm đồ bày ở cửa hàng forum(n): diễn đàn (to) sound weird: nghe có vẻ khác thường/kì quặc (to) be hooked on something: yêu thích cái gì (to) be addicted to something: nghiện cái gì (to) hang out(with S.O): đi chơi (với bạn bè) - Gets SS to try to guess the meaning of the extra vocabularies(if they don’t know) 2. Read the article on the magazine 4teen website - T: You are going to read about some activities teenagers do in their spare time. - Look at the photos of them(with name and country), Can you guess what each person likes doing as leisure activities? - Set the reading time limit(2mins) and have ss speed read text. - Memory game: SS close their books and tell how much information they can remember from the text(not check comprehension) in two competing groups. 3. Building netlingo dictionary - Asks Ss if they notice any other particular features of the text. - Elicit Ss’ answers by drawing their attention to the form of the text(eg. Its layout and abbreviation), explain that this is from a webpage and abbreviation. - Get ss to underline and tell if they understand the abbreviation in the text. Gap fill: - Fill information in the text to complete the table Who? What activity is mentioned? What does he/she think? It’s easy Linn going to the community center, painting, she loves it dancing, doing drama Minh playing football, helping his aunt in running He likes it cooking class it’s fun Manuel playing computer games, doing judo He’s addicted to it. It’s ok - Ss do the task in pairs - Allow Ss to read the text more closely to fill in the table III. Discussion - Get ss to put the leisure activities in the text from the table above in order from the most interesting to the most boring in groups of 4 or 5 - Asks Ss to discuss, give opinions ,and negotiate with each other to agree on a mutual list. - T goes around to observe ss’ work IV. Aims By the end of the lesson ,students will be able toread for general and specific information about the possible effects of spending too much time on the computer and talk about good and bad sides of leisure activities - Skills: Drill reading and speaking mainly - Structure: + I think computers are useful + I agree with you - Teaching aids: Textbook, handouts B. Procedures I. Warm up: Hangman COMPUTERS - Chatting: How many ss use computer? What do you use computer for? - Discussing: What are the benefits of using computers or mobile phone for leisure activities? What are the harmful things it may bring you? SS discuss the two last questions in pairs, call some ss share their ideas, copy the ideas on board II. Reading - Asks ss to look at the tittle and picture then predic who they are going to read (about a student named Quang), and what his story is about(using computer). 1. Vocabulary technology (n): khoa học kĩ thuật virtual (a): ảo (chỉ có trên mạng) rely on (v): dựa vào/phụ thuộc vào exist(v): tồn tại ban (v): cấm ( - band s.o from doing sth) - SS read the text and underline the words they don’t know. Have ss discuss any unfamiliar words from the text. Guides some words if they can’t guess the meaning. 2. Multiple choice - Ss read through the text and choose the best answer in individually, encourage them to explain their choice. Keys: 1. B, 2. C 3. Answer given - SS write the questions for the answers based on the information from the text. - T guides: you’ll need to look at the keywords in the answers to find the questions. - Ss work in individually , then compare with their partner. What leisure activities do teenagers do these day? 4. What are benefits of using computer? 4. Mind map - Ss remember the text and do the mind map in groups of four Quang’s using computer Benefits effects Do the gardening harm both mind and body Know the names of plants Improve English - T asks ss some questions: Does Quang do the right things when he spends time on computer like that? Are his parents right when they want to ban him from using computer? What will you say when you want to give your opinions / asking for opinions/agree or disagree with someone’s opinions? Ss look at the Language notes. III. Speaking 1.Matching: Quang and his parents are talking about how he should spend his free time . Decide which statements are from Quang and which are from his parents. Quang His parents I’ve made lots of Go out and play I think computer games train You see your real .. My English is much .. Sitting for too long . - T: These speech bubbles are from Quang and his parents, decide which are from . And say why you think that(based on the text) in pairs Ex: A: I think Q says . B: Exactly(etc) 2. Role-play: What’s the solution? - deliver ss in three lines three cards about the tasks of their role. Get them to think how to express their opinions with their role. - When they are ready, put them into new groups of three which contains 3 roles, remind them to try to use Language notes for their role- play - call some groups to demonstrate their work front the class if time allows.
