Planing date :5/12/ 2020 Period 39 UNIT 5: FESTIVALS IN VIET NAM Lesson 5: Skills 1 A. Aims : By the end of the lesson , Ss will be able to read for specific information about a festival and talk about their choice of visiting one of festivals. - Language skills: Listening, speaking - Teaching aids:, Loudspeaker, extra board - grammar : compound sentences B. Content * Warm up: Kim’s game - Show some pictures of festivals and ask Ss to look at them quickly in about 3 seconds - Hide them and ask Ss to say out what festivals they have seen - Ask them something about some of the festivals they’ve seen especially about The Hung King temple festival and Huong pagoda festival - Lead in I. Reading 1. Activity 1: Pre- questions -Ask Ss to work in group of six, looking at the pictures and answering the questions in part 1 - T haven’t checked the answers with the class yet but let them be answered later 2. Skim the text (Read quickly and get general ideas) - Give Ss two minutes to skim the passages and check the answers in 1 ( Possible answers: 1. P1: They are having a ceremony of offering incense and specialities P2: They are taking part in Huong pagoda festival 2. People worship the Hung King who are the founders and also the first emperors of the nation. They worship Buddha at the pagoda) 3. Activity 2: Scan the text and find the words - Give Ss one more minute to read the text again and find underline the words in 3 with a pencil - T may help Ss work out the meaning of these words from the context (Key: 1. Emperors 4. From overseas 2. features 5. Hiking 3. joyful 6. Scenery) 4. Activity 3: Read the text and answer the questions - Set a long time limit for students to read the text again and answer the questions in pairs - Asking them to note where they can find the information that help them to answer the questions - Call pair by pair to give feedback - Others listen and check their answers Key: 1. The Hung King temple festival takes place from the 8th to 11th day of the third Lunar month 2. Incense, specialities such as Chung cake, day cake and five – fruit trays 3. Because there are many joyful activities including bamboo swings, lion dances, wrestling and Xoan singing performances 4. People join a procession and make offerings of incense, flowers, fruit and candles 5. Ss answer II. Speaking 1. Ask Ss to work in pairs, choosing one of the two places: Hung King temple festival or Huong pagoda festival to go to. Remind them to give reasons for their choice Ask Ss to think about what to take with them. Ss may use the suggestions in pictures or add more if possible and give reason T may make a model with a good student Eg: S1: which place do you prefer to go to, Ha? S2: I prefer to go to .. because I S1: What should we take with? 2. get ss to report their decisions to class( Which location is more popular and why?) Ex: I think Huong pagoda is more popular because there are not only the people in all over the country but the foreigners also come to join the festival or visit. So I prefer to go there to and I think I ‘ll need to take .(etc) III. Homework: - Learn by heart the new words - Translate the text into Vietnamese. – Do the mind map: Festivals in Viet Nam - Do exercise part D - Prepare for Skill 2 Planing date :5/12/ 2020 Period 40 UNIT 5: FESTIVALS IN VIET NAM Lesson 6: Skills 2 A. AIMS By the end of the lesson, Ss can listen for specific information about Vietnamese heroes and write about a festival in Viet Nam - Teaching aids:, Loudspeaker, extra board - Skills: Listening, writing, speaking - Lexical items: Mythical ,Commune - grammar : compound sentences B. Content: I. Check up Quang Trung Vietnamese Saint Giong heroes - Ask volunteers to come up and add any words or phrases to the word-web connected with the topic of ‘heroes’. Accept all ideas and don’t correct anything. Then tell Ss they are going to listen to a passage about a Vietnamese hero and open the books II. New lesson: Vocabulary: Mythical: (adj) thần thoại Commune: xã, công xã Motherland: (n) quê hương, tổ quốc Checking: R – O – R * LISTENING: 1. Chatting: 1. Who is Saint Giong? 2. What did he do for the country? - Ask Ss to work in pairs, describing the picture and them answer the questions. 2. Listen and circle the correct answer A, B, or C Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a tour guide giving information about the Going Festival. Ask them to read the questions carefully and try to predict the answers based on what they now. Remind them to pay attention to key words on the options. Play the recording and ask Ss to circle the right answers. Check their answers with the whole class. Key: 1.B 2.A 3.C 3. Listen to the talk again and write answers to the questions below: 1. How different is Saint Going from other heroes in Viet Nam? 2. When do the preparations for the festival begin? 3. What kind of ceremony takes place after the procession? 4. What happens when night fall? 5. How important is this festival? - Have Ss underline key words in the questions. Play the recording. Ask them to write answers on a piece of paper. If necessary, play the recording again for Ss to check answers. Then select Ss to read out their answers to the class. Elicit any corrections from the class as you write their answers on the broad. Discuss with your partner the festival in Viet Nam that you like best. Use the web below to take notes. - Set a time limit for Ss to brainstorm ideas and write their notes. Move around, helping Ss with ideas where necessary. Ask Ss to refer back to reading passages in Skills 1 for useful language and ideas, and note some necessary expressions and language as well as connectors they may need on the board. Ask Ss to work individually to write a first draft. Display all or some of the articles on the wall/board. Other Ss and T give comments. Ss edit and revise the articles as homework when while because and but so first then moreover III. Check up: Write an article about this festival the school website. II. Warm up: ( Vocabulary) Game: BACK TO THE BOARD - Ss work in two teams. T gives a picture and rearrange the letters to label the picture. I. Vocabulary. Activity a. Rearrange the letters to label the pictures - Ask Ss to work individually, then compare their answers with a partner. - Ask some Ss to write their answers on the board. Complete the text about the Kate Festival with the words in the box - Ask Ss to work individually, then check answers with a partner. Check Ss’ answers. Ask some Ss to write answers on the board. For 3 and 4, ask Ss to do them individually first. Then Ss check their answers with a partner before discussing the answers as a class. Ask Ss to interview each other about the 3 activities that they like best and give reasons. Encourage them to give as many reasons as possible. Finished! Finally, ask Ss to complete the self-assessment. Identify any difficulties and weak areas and provide further practice. III. PROJECT TALENT SHOW 1. First, ask Ss to work in groups. Ask and answers the questions Suggested answers: 1. Chau van singing, xoan singing, quan ho singing and don can tai tu singing 2. Chau van is often performed in competitions or religious ceremonies in the north of Viet Nam. - Xoan is often performed in the Hung King Temple Festival or in other local festival in the Phu Tho Province. - Quan ho is often performed in the Lim Festival, Bac Ninh Province and local festivals - Don ca tai tu is often performed in the south of Viet Nam, normally in weddings, birthday anniversaries, and local festival. 2. Ask Ss work in bigger groups to do the project. Based on the result of Ss’ answers to question 3, rearrange the groups so that Ss who know how to sing these songs are distributed among the groups. Ss read the instructions in the book. Answers Ss’ questions if there are any. Ss will probably need to do some research outside of class before making presentations and performances. Start the next lesson with talent show. Have Ss perform, then ask the whole class to vote for the best performance. IV. Homework - Review the vocabulary of Unit 5 - Review Ex. 4,5 & 6 onto your exercise book
