Reading: (2pts) * Read the passage, then answer the questions: MY VILLAGE We are Khmer Krom, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the south of Viet Nam. We live by farming – mostly rice – and fishing on the Mekong River. Life is sometimes hard as our work depends heavily on the weather. When it is not harvest time, the men of the village go fishing from early morning and don’t return until late afternoon. By the time they return, most of the village women will be waiting for them on the river bank. They wait to buy the fish, which they will later sell at the local market or bring to the nearby town for a higher price. Our children will be there too. We love running around the beach and waiting for the boats to come in. Our most important festival of the year is the Chol Chnam Thmay, which celebrates the New Year. It falls in mid-April. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to use the lexical items related to the topic “customs and traditions”, understand the basic concept of “customs and traditions” and know some Vietnamese customs and traditions Lexical iterms: accepted generations . spot onsharp Social table manners Skills: listening , reading - Teaching aids: Extra boards, loud speaker B. PROCEDURES I. Warm up: Chain game - Ss work in two teams. A st from group A calls out the name of an ethnic group in Viet Nam, then points at one st in group B. This st has to call out the name of other ethnic group. The game stops when a group cannot give out the name of any ethnic group or when the time is up. The team with more ethnic group wins. II. New lesson: 1. Pre questions: - T: “ Yes, ethnic groups in Viet Nam have their own ways of life “ + What can you base on to distinguish from this ethnic group to other ethnic groups? - Ss: customs and traditions - T asks Ss to call out some customs and traditions they know 2. Set the scene: -Ask Ss to open their books and look at the picture and the phrase under GETTING STARTED. - T asks Ss prediction questions about the pictures. For more able classes, brainstorm question with Ss and write them on the board. Questions may include: . What can you see in the picture? . Who do you think they are? . What are they talking about? 3. Listen and Read - Ss answer the questions as a class. Play the recording and have Ss follow along. After that Ss can compare their answers with the information in the dialogue and add some more details to their answer. a. Can you find a word/phrase means: - Ss word independently to find a words with the given meanings in the dialogue. Allow them to share answers before discussing as a class. Lexical iterms:- Christian, Sponge cake, Fire crackers, Filmstrip, Offspring - Sounds: / spr / , / str / Skills : listening, reading - Teaching aids: Extra boards, loud speaker B. PROCEDURES I. Warm up: Brainstorming: CUSTOMS TRADITIONS - Ss discuss and list some customs and traditions of Vietnamese - Ss work in two teams – write them on the board. - Check up: - answer three questions in SS book - Name some customs and traditions you know. II. Vocabulary: - Draw Ss’ attention to the Watch out! Box. Explain to them the words’ custom’ and’ tradition’ can be countable – uncountable. Remember to come back to this point after finishing exercise. 1. Lesson 4: Communication A. AIMS 1. Educational aim: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to describe the table manners in the UK and compare with those in VN - Lexical iterms: prong, cutlery, palm, tray, mat, host/ hostess - Grammar: Giving opinions about the table manners Skills: Speaking, listening. Teaching aids: Extra boards, loud speaker B. PROCEDURES I. Warm up: - Ss play the game: AUCTION 1. My mother always tells me that I must be home by 9 p.m 2. You should be late for school. 3. She have to wear that customs because it’s the family tradition. 4. In the past men didn’t have to wear Ao dai. 5. When you go to Brazil, you should tip the waiter 10% of the bill 6. In Australia , you mustn’t comment on a person’s accent. 7. In India, women don’t have to shake hands to greet guests. 8. You should wear skirts at the pagoda. - Ss play in two teams. - There are 8 sentences. 4 sentences are true and 4 sentences are false. The team that get more true sentences is the winner. II. New lesson 1. In the second picture, they are sitting around the dining table. - In the first picture, people are using rice bowls and chopsticks. In the second picture, they are using cutlery. 3. Write T (true) or F (false) Lesson plan 8 Read the following sentences about table manners in Britain. Work in pairs to decide if statements are true or false. - Have some Ss write their answers on the board 4. Listening: - Now listen to Nick giving a presentation on table manners in Britain and check your answers. - Ss listen to the recording twice. Play the following roles. A. You are Minh. You invite your British friend to come for dinner. She asks a lot of questions about Vietnamese table manners. B. You are Jessica from Britain. You want to learn about Vietnamese table manners so you can comfortable at dinner. You compare these with British table manners. - Ss work in pairs and role – play. They continue the conversation in the book or make up their own. After some time, call some pairs to act the conversation in front of the class. Other Ss give comments. Give praise and feedback on Ss conversations. III. Homework: - Learn by heart the new words - Do the exercise C1, C 2 (P 31) - Prepare: Skills 1 Lesson plan 8
