UNIT 9: FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORID
Lesson 4: Communication
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Learn some extra vocabulary about the topic “Festivals”
- Know more about special festivals in Vietnam as well as in the world..
2. Competence: Communication, ability to use language, self-learning capacity,
creative capacity
3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: listening and speaking
B. Teaching aids: Ss’ books, projector, cards,laptop
C. Procedures
* Warm up: - Greetings
- Chatting: ask and answer about Ss’ favourite festivals
I. Pre-speaking
1. Vocabulary
- Get students to do a matching exercise to revise the words.
Thanksgiving a brown sauce made by adding flour to the juices that come out
of meat while it is cooking

Christmas in Britain and at Thanksgiving in the US

2. Activity 1 : Discussion: In pairs Ss look at the picture and discuss the questions.
Have Ss share their answers with the whole class. Quickly write their answers on the
board.

3. Activity 2: Listen and check: Play the recording for Ss to check their answers.

Confirm the correct answers.
4. Activity 3: True or false: Ss work in pairs to decide if the statements are true or
false. Have some Ss write their answers on the board. Play the recording again for Ss
to check. If there are any incorrect answers, have Ss correct them and explain the
reason for their correction.

II . While-speaking
1. Activity 1: (mapped dialogue)
- Ask and answer about the Festivals:
- Ss work in pairs. Imagine that one of them is a student from the US and the other is
from Phu Yen, Viet Nam. Explain that only the Ss from Viet Nam read the
information on page 35. They continue the conversation in the book or make up their
own. After some time, call some pairs to act out the conversation in front of the class.
Other Ss give comments. Give feedback on Ss' conversation.
S1 : This photo is so beautiful. Where did you take it?
S2 : I took it in Hoi Mua festival in my village.
Do you have a harvest festival in your country?
S1 : Sure.It’s Thanksgiving. When do you celebrate Hoi Mua festival ?
S2 : In March. What about Thanksgiving?
S1 : On the third Thursday of November. How often is Hoi Mua held?
S2 : Every year.
S1 : What do people often do there?
S2 : ....................................................... What about Thanksgiving?
S1: .......................................................and What activities are there?
S2: ...................................................
S1: It Sounds intresting.
- T gets 5 pairs from groups to represent their performance.
2. Activity 2: Report Hoi Mua festival in front of the whole class.
- T gets each student from groups to represent their report.
III. Post-speaking
1. Activity 1: T sets the target task: T asks students to talk about their
favorite festivals in their country (in groups of 4-5).
2. Activity 2: Use suggested questions to sum up what Ss have learnt in the
lesson
IV. Homework
1. Learn by heart extra vocabulary.
2. Write a paragraph about a festival you like.
3. Do exercises part C in workbook.
4. Prepare: Skills 1.

A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Read for specific information about an unusual festival
- Rive their opinions about the some unusual festivals.
2.Competence: Communication, ability to use language, self-learning capacity,
co-operation.
3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: reading and speaking
5. Grammar points:
B. Teaching aids: Ss’ books, projector, cards,laptop
C. Procedures
I. Warm up: Ss talk about their favorite festival and answer questions from
other students
II. Pre reading
1. Activity 1. Order the pictures: - work in pairs
- Have Ss look at the pictures and describe each of them quickly.
- Ask some questions:
? What can you see in the picture?' or “What are the people doing?"...
-T: Now Ss work in pairs to order the pictures.
- Then T check Ss' answers and write them on the board.
III. While – reading
1. Activity 1: Read and check the answers:
- Ss read the texts quickly and check their answers.
- Have Ss correct their answers on the board if they are incorrect.
Key:
Answer the questions:
- Ss read the texts again to answer the questions.
- Ss can underline parts of the text that help them with the answers.
- Ss compare their answers before giving the answers to T.
- Ask them to give evidence when giving the answers.
Key:

2. Activity 2. Speaking
Discussion:
- Ss work in groups and read the newspaper headlines. They discuss what is unusual
about the festivals. Have some Ss present their group's ideas.
- Work on groups:
-Tell Ss that the table includes information about the two festivals in 4. Ss work in
groups and prepare a short presentation about the festival they like.
-This activity can be organized as a competitive game. Give the groups some minutes
to prepare and rehearse for the presentation.
-When time is up, some groups will be invited to present in one minute. Other groups
comment and then vote for the best presentation.
IV. Post reading
1.Activity 1. Discussion:
- Ss work in groups and tell about what unusual festivals they know. They discuss
what is unusual about the festivals
V. Homework
1. Read and answer the questions again.
2. Do exercises in workbook.
3. Prepare : Skills 2.
