Lesson 3: A closer look 2
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss can master the present simple and the present
continuous tenses and practice doing exercises.
- Grammar: the present simple and the present continuous tense.
- Skills: writing, speaking
- Teaching aids: Posters, pictures
B. Procedure
I. Warm up: True or False repetition
- I live in Da nang city. - He is reading books now.
- We studying English today. - Do Miss Nga work in this school?
- Look! The girls are playing games.
II. New lesson
1.The present simple
Formation:
a/ Positive: I / You / We / They + Verb ( infi. )
He / She / It + V-s/ V-es
b/ Negative: I / You / We / They + don’t / do not + Verb
He / She / It + doesn’t / does not + Verb
c/ Questions and short answers:
Do / Does + S + V ?
+ Yes, S + do / does.
+ No, S + don’t / doesn’t.
Remember! The present simple verbs with : he / she / it need an s/es
Use: When something often happens or is fixed: The present simple
Example: - I usually go to school by bike.
- What does he do in the morning?
- Hoa and Hong don’t play tennis after school.
* Write the correct form of the verbs:
- T introduces: Miss Nguyet is interviewing Duy for the school newsletter.
- lets Ss write the correct form of the verbs individually.
- Feedback: Ss write their answers
- T corrects their answers and gives explaination if necessary.
Key:

* Role-play the interview
- T asks Ss to role-play the interview ( pair work ).
- T observes and helps Ss when and where necessary.

- Feedback: 2 pairs act out the interview.
* Correct the sentences
- T asks Ss to read the interview and 5 sentences carefully and correct them.
- T allows Ss to write the sentences in their notebooks, referring to the
interview.
- Feedback: Ss write their answers on the board.
- T checks and corrects their answers sentence by sentence.
1/ Duy lives near here. 2/ Duy likes / loves his new school.
3/ Vy and Duy ride to school. 4/ Mr. Quang teaches Duy English.
5/ At break time, Phong reads in the library.
- T asks Ss to learn the rule and use of the present simple.
2. The present continuous
Formation:
a/ Positive: S + am / is / are + V-ing + ..
b/ Negative: S + am / is / are + not + V-ing + ..
c/ Questions and short answers:
Am / Is / Are + S + V-ing ? - Yes, S + am / is / are.
- No, S + isn’t / aren’t.
Use: When something is happening now: The present continuous
Example: - I am going to school now.
- Where are the students playing football?
- Look ! Nam is drawing a big house.
* Find the present continous form in the conversation:
T asks Ss to listen to the conversation in Getting started and find the present
continuous form. Ss read the sentences, using the present continuous tense.
Answers: is knocking , is having , are wearing
* Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs:
T explains the example: Yummy! I’m having school lunch with my new friends.
T asks Ss to write the correct verb forms.
Feedback: Ss read the verb and the whole sentence correctly.
KEY: 1. am not playing 2. are studying 3. aren’t doing
4. am having 5. are riding
- T explains: the differences between the 2 tenses
* Choose the correct tense of the verbs:
T asks Ss to choose the correct tense by themselves.
Note: - Adverbs of time: now, on Monday and Friday
- The command: Look!, Listen!............................

III. Homework:
- Practice using the present simple and present continuous tense.

Lesson 4: Communication
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss can ask appropriate questions when making new
friends at a new school, know qualities of a good friend in class, have
opportunities to make friends in class and understand how a good friend is, then
talk about their friend.
- Teaching aids: Posters, pictures, loudspeaker
- Skills: speaking, listening, reading
B. Procedure
I. Warm up: Hang man: F R I E N D S H I P
1. Do you have new friends? – Do you have any old friends in our class?
2. Who are they?
3. Do you love them? Why? Or Why not ?
4. What’s a friendship like? Let’s begin our lesson today
II. Pre-speaking
1. Vocabulary
(to) make friends: kết bạn
pocket money (n): tiền túi, tiền riêng
classmate (n): bạn cùng lớp
(to) share: chia sẻ
subject (n): môn học
remember (v): nhớ
* Checking: R.O.R
2. Game: Making friends
- T asks Ss: ? how they often make friends?
? what they often say when they first meet a new friend?
? what questions they often ask ,etc.
- Feedback 1: Ss answer these questions.
- T asks Ss read individually and tick the questions they think are suitable to ask
a new friend at school.
- T lets Ss discuss in groups of 4.
- Ss answer and T may ask why or why not they tick this or that question.
- T allows Ss some time to write more questions on a piece of paper and share
them with the class.
Example: Where do you live?
What’s your telephone number?.
III. Practice
1. Friendship quiz
o T shows Ss some pictures about friendship.

- T asks Ss to give qualities of a good friend in class.
- Ss can write as many words as possible.
- Eg: friendly, generous, helpful, cheerful, truthful, faithful, kind .
2. Interview
Ss work in groups of 4 to interview the other members, using these questions.

2. Do you help your teacher in the class?
3. Do you share things with your classmates?
4. Do you keep quite when your teacher is talking?
5. Do you play with your classmates at break time?
6. Do you help your classmates with their homework?

- Feedback: Ss answer the questions: Yes / No
3. Friendship
* T encourages Ss to give nice sentences about friendship.
- A good friend is a good listener.
- A good friend should be able to give time and attention to his friends.
- Be a giver, not a taker
- Be open, honest and real
- A friend in deed is a friend in need
IV. Further Practice: Class presentation
Choose some Ss to present to the class about their good friends and why they are
good friends (avoid talking about someone who is considered “ not a good
friend”)
V. Homework

A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss can read for specific information, read emails and
web pages to understand about some schools and talk about school
activities, subjects and what Ss do at school then discuss with friends about the
school they like or dislike
- Teaching aids: posters, textbook
- Skills: Reading, speaking
B. Procedure
I. Warm up
Tell me names of some secondary school in Ha Tinh city: Nam Ha, Nguyen Du,
Le Van Thiem, Le Binh .
Today we are going to get to know some secondary schools in VN and around
the world. Let’s begin our lesson today.
II. Pre-speaking
1. Vocabulary
overseas (n/ adv): ở nước ngoài
kindergarten (n): nhà trẻ, mẫu giáo
modern equipment (n): trang thiết bị hiện đại
join (v): tham gia, tham dự
boarding school (n): trường nội trú
be surrounded by: được bao quanh bởi
creative (adj): năng động
international (adj): thuộc quốc tế
2. Scanning reading
Look at the information here
a. It’s a boarding school for female SS from 4 to 18
b. It’s an international school for Ss from year 1 to year 12
c. It has 7 classes and 194 Ss
Read the texts quickly and choose the names of the schools with a, b, c
Key: a – PLC school b – Vinabrita school c – An Lac Lower Secondary
school
III. While-reading
1. Skimming reading: Now read the texts again and complete the sentences
- Ss live and study in a school. They go home at weekends.

Allow Ss to read in chorus once .Then call some individuals to read aloud to the
class. Check their pronunciation and intonation.
IV. While-speaking
- Ask Ss to refer back to the 3 schools. Give some background of the schools - +
LC Sydney (Presbyterian Ladies College Sydney) : an international school for
girls from kindergarten to year 12 in Sydney Australia
+ An Lac Lower Secondary school: a small school in a mountainous region in
Son Dong District, Bac Giang Province.
+ Vinabrita School: an international school for Ss from year 1 to year 12 in HN.
- Allow Ss time to answer the questions: Which school (among the three above)
would you like to go to? Why?
- Ss complete the table in their notebooks.
- Then divide the class into groups of 4 or 5, let them discuss their answers to
the questions, and give the reasons. When they finish, ask some Ss to talk to the
class, then the class give their comments on their friends’ Procedure,
pronunciation, fluency, language (grammar, use of words .), body language,
etc.
