Son Tien Secondary School Lesson plan of English 9 Planning date:28/3/2021 P 54 UNIT 9: NATURAL DISASTERS Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen and read + LF 1 A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Knowledge: -Know more about natural disasters. - Know something about the weather from the weather forecast. - Vocabulary: turn up, expect, thunderstorm, delta, just in case, trust - Grammar: relative clauses 2. Competences: Co-operation, self-study, communication, creative capacity 3. Qualities: studious, responsible and honest. 4. Skills: Listening, speaking, writing and reading B. Preparation - Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, flashcards, laptop, loudspeaker, projector. - Students: Textbook, notebook, pen C. Procedure: I. Warm – up: Matching - Have Ss match the names with suitable pictures - Ss compare with their friends - T corrects if necessary. II. Pre-reading 1. Pre - teach vocabulary - turn up (n): tăng lên (mime) - expect (v): trông chờ, trông đợi ((translation) - thunderstorm (n): mưa bão có sấm sét (picture) - delta (n): đồng bằng (visual) - just in case: phòng khi (translation) - trust (v): tin tưởng (synonym) * Check: What and Where 2. Pre-Questions Set the scene: Thuy is talking to her grandmother while they both are watching TV. Ask students to guess to answer the question: “What are they watching?” - Give feedback. III. While- reading -Students read and answer the pre-question: They are watching the weather forecast on TV. Gap-fill: - Have students read the dialogue silently and do Ex 2b/p75. Comprehension Questions: Lucky numbers. a) Why does Thuy’s grandmother ask her to turn up the volume? b) Which area is the hottest? c) Where is Thuy going on a picnic with her friends? d) What does her grandma want her to bring along? Answers: a) Because she wants to listen to the weather forecast. b) Ho Chi Minh City is the hottest. c) She is going to a park on the other side of Thang Long Bridge with her old friends (She’s going on a picnic) d) She wants her to bring along the raincoat. IV. Post-reading * Relative clauses (continued) - Have Ss do tasks 1 in Language focus - Call some Ss to write the answers on the board. - T corrects if necessary. V. Knowledge: -Talk to one another about what prepare for a typhoon. - Lexical Items: bucket, leak, candle, blanket - Grammar: present simple. 2. Competence: communication, ability to use language, self-learning capacity, creative capacity 3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest. 4. Skills: listening and speaking, writing B. Preparation - Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, flashcards, laptop, loudspeaker, projector. - Students: Textbook, notebook, pen C. Procedures A. Procedure: I. Warm up: brainstorming: what should we do to prepare for a typhoon buying some food II. Pre – speaking 1. Pre – teach vocabulary - bucket (n): cái xô (visual) - leak (n): sự rò rĩ, chổ thủng (visual) - candle (n): nến (picture) - blanket (n): chăn, mền (picture) * Checking: rub out and remember. 2. While-speaking: - Write part a) on the extra board and ask students to check what preparation they think should be done before a typhoon. - Write part b) and some cues on the extra board and ask students to match * Matching: cues (b) Filling all buckets with water • The market will be closed and no food will be available Buying a ladder • There may be a power cut Buying some canned food • The water pipes may be damaged by the typhoon Buying matches • There must be strong wind blowing Tying the roof to the ground • It will be raining hard with pegs and ropes - feedback. Use the extra board above and guide students to speak. Ex: T: I think we should buy some... Good Ss: Yes, I think so. T : I think... St: What for ?/ Why?... Ask students to practice in pairs –close / open pairs. IV. Post –speaking: divide students into groups of 4 and discuss about buying things before a typhoon. V.
