Unit 8: CELEBRATIONS
Period 49. Speaking and language focus 1, 2
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson ,students will be able to give and respond to
compliments for common
situations .
1.Language contents:
- Grammar: give and respond to compliments .
- Vocabulary: congratulate , well done , take part in , charity , norminate .
2. Competence: communication, ability to use language, self-learning capacity, creative
capacity
3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: listening and speaking, writing
B. Preparation
- Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, flashcards, laptop, loudspeaker, projector.
- Students: Textbook, notebook, pen
C. Procedures:
I.Warm up:
*Guessing game :
-Teacher divides the class into 2 groups and explain how to play the game .
+ Information :
It has ten letters .
The first letter is c .
If you get 10 mark you will get it .
Which letter is it ?
Key word :
C O M P L I M E N T
- Teacher asks students some questions to introduce the lesson .
+ Questions:
1.When do people give a compliment to other ?
2.Do you usually give a compliment ?
3.On which occasion ? To whom ?
4.Do you know how to respond it ?
II. Pre-speaking:
1. Vocabulary:
-Effective activist (n) Thành viên tích cực.
-Charity program (n) Chương trình từ thiện
-Take part in (v) Tham gia.
-Congratulate (v) Chúc mừng
- Nominate (v) tuyển (chọn ) / đề cử.
to be nominated : được tuyển (chọn ) / đề cử.

2.Set a scene :
- Teacher: Trang has just won the first prize in the English speaking contest.What does
Mai say to pay Trang a compliment ? And what does Trang respond ?

3.How to give and respond to compliments :
- Teacher sticks a poster on board and explain how to give and respond to compliments .

-That’s great / an excellent - It is nice of you to say

-Let me cogratulate you - That’s very kind of
you .
- Students:Take notes and memorize.
III. While-speaking:
*Picture drill:
-Teacher sticks pictures and guide students to do the task .
b.On her mother’s birthday , Huyen made a beautiful cake to celebrate :
Mother:Well done , Huyen .
Huyen : Thanks , Mom
c.Tuan is an active student.He has taken part in different charity activities in his
town.Tuanhas been nominated as the most effective activist in the town charity
program.
Friends : Congratulations on your nomination , Tuan .
Tuan : It is nice of you to say so .
d.Hoa brings to class a new picture she has painted.
You : That is an excellent drawing , Hoa .
Hoa : That is very nice of you to say so .
- Students work in pairs:read the situation on P.66, 67 then give and respond to the
compliments
- Teacher calls on some pairs to practice the dialogue before class.
-feedback and correct the mistakes .
III. Post-speaking:
1) Discussion.
- T: "Think of situations in which you can compliment your friends and get responses
from him / her / them, then make up dialogues with your partner. "
+T: asks Ss to set up the situations on their words first, then in pairs to share and
compare.

(+) Your friend picked up the object someone dropped and has just returned it. You'll give
him or her a compliment and get response.

(+) Your friend has just won a school chess championship. You'll give him or her a
compliment and get response.

B: It's very kind / nice of you to say so.
2) Language focus 1& 2.
- Give the aim and the requirement of exercise
- Explain the relative clauses.
* Mệnh đề quan hệ là một bộ phận của câu, nó cho chúng ta biết người hay vật nào mà
người nói muốn ám chỉ.
+ Chúng ta dùng Who trong mệnh đề quan hệ khi chúng ta nói về người.
+ Chúng ta dùng Which trong mệnh đề quan hệ khi chúng ta nói về vật.
Ex: Tet is a festival which occurs in late January or early February.
The man who lives next door is very friendly
- Ask students to work in pair to do language focus 1 and 2.
- Teacher checks and gives feedback.
L. 1: Join the sentences.Use relative clauses
b.This watch is a gift which was given to me by my aunt on my 14th birthday.
c.My friend, Tom who sings Western folk songs very well, can compose songs .
d.We often go to the town cultural house which always opens on public holidays.
e.I like the books which tell about different people and their cultures .

g.July liked the full-moon festival which happened in mid-fall very much .
L. 2: Describe each of the people in the pictures
*Ex: - I am the boy who is wearing a while T - Short
- My aunt Judy is the woman who is holding Jack
*Suggested answers :
-Mom is the woman who is sitting in an armchair receiving a gift from the little girl.
-Dad is the man who is standing behind my sister
-Linda is the girl who is wearing a pink dress/ giving a gift to mom.
-Grandmother is the woman who is wearing a violet blouse/ giving a gift to the baby .
-Uncle John is the man who is wearing a pink jumper.
-Jack is the little boy who is sitting on his mother's lap .
V.Homework:
-Learn the new words by heart.
-Practice the dialogues with your partners.
-Prepare: Listening.
