Lesson 5: Writing
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a letter of complaint and
know how to use structures while writing a letter such as “suggest + V-ing”;
“look forward”
- Teaching aids: textbook, posters
- Lexical Items: complain, complaint, fine, resolution, float, prohibit
- Grammar:
B. Procedure
I. Warm-up:
* Categories: Ask students to find out the verbs beginning with the letter that
teacher gives. E.g.: a-add, b-borrow, c-cut, d-drive, s-study, t-talk, .
II. Pre-writing
1. Pre – teach vocabulary
- complain (v): phàn nàn (translation)
- complaint (n): sự phàn nàn (translation)
- fine (v): phạt (situation)
- resolution (n): giải pháp (translation)
- float (v): trôi nổi (picture)
- prohibit (v): ngăn cấm, ngăn chặn (translation)
* Check: R-O-R
2. Ordering:
Ask students to keep their book closed. Provide students 5 sections of a
complaint letter (with their definitions) in random order. Ask them to rearrange.
Answer key: A complaint letter has five sections:
1. Situation. 2. Complication. 3. Resolution. 4. Action. 5. Politeness.
*Set the scene: Mr. Nhat wrote a letter to the director of L&P Company in
HCM city. The five sections of his letter are not in the right order. Read and
label each section with the correct letters: (S, C, R, A or P)
-Give feedback.
III.While-writing
* Questions:
a) What do people do in the lake behind your house? (They begin to catch fish)
b) What makes you worried? (They use electricity to catch fish)

Ss write the letter in groups of five.
T goes round and helps Ss.
*Sample:
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to you about the problem of fish catching of many people in the
lake behind my house.
I am very worried because they use electricity to catch fish. After a short time
they leave the lake, a lot of small fish died and floated on the water surface.
Other animals such as frogs, toads, and even birds have also died from electric
shock waves.
I would suggest the local authorities should prohibit and fine heavily anyone
using this way of catching fish.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing the protection of environment
from the local authorities.

UNIT 7: SAVING ENERGY
Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen and read + LF 2
A. Aims:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the text for
details about saving energy and they can also know how to save energy at
home.
- Teaching aids: Text book, posters, pictures,
- Lexical Items: water bill, enormous, reduce, plumber, crack, dripping
faucet.
- Grammar: Phrasal verbs
B. Procedure
I. Warm up: Chatting
Have the students look at the picture /p57 and ask them some questions:
- Who is watching TV?
- Is the light still burning?
- What happens to the faucets?
- Should we turn the TV off?
- Must we pay for water and electricity we use in our home?
- What should we do to save energy?
II. Pre-reading
1. Pre-teach vocabulary
- water bill (n): hóa đơn tiền nước (realia)
- enormous (adj): quá nhiều (synonym)
- reduce (v): giảm (translation)
- plumber (n): thợ sửa ống nước (picture)
- crack (n): chổ bị vỡ (visual)
- dripping faucet (n): vòi nước bị rò rĩ (picture)

2. T/F Statements Prediction
* Set the scene: Mrs. Mi is talking to her neighbor, Mrs. Ha looks very
worried. Now think about the conversation between them.
a) Mrs. Ha is worried about her water bill.
b) Mrs. Mi gives Mrs. Ha advice on how to save water.

c) Mrs. Ha has checked the pipes in the house and found no cracks.
d) A plumber is a person who repairs electric appliances.
e) Mr. Robinson suggests taking showers because they can save water.

III. While- reading
- Read and check the prediction.
Answer: a-T; b-T; c-F; d-F; e-T
- Read the second time to answer the questions. (Ask students to work in
pairs)
a) Why is Mrs. Ha worried?
b) How much money does Mrs. Ha pay for her water bill?
c) What does Mrs. Mi advise Mrs. Ha?
d) How much water can be wasted a month by a dripping faucet?
Check: LUCKY NUMBERS.
IV. Post-reading: Language focus 2
- Have Ss do language focus 2
- Call some Ss to write the answers on the board
- T corrects if necessary
V. Homework
- Learn by heart the new words
- Write five sentences telling what you should do to save energy
