Aims By the end of the lesson, students will know more about the environmental problems and the solutions to keep the environment clean and clear. - Teaching aids: Textbook, posters, pictures - Lexical Items: deforestation, garbage dump, dynamite fishing, spraying pesticides, disappointed, sewage. - Grammar: Adverb clauses of reason: because/as/since B. Procedure I. Warm up: *Brainstorming: air pollution dirty street Possible answers: - The destruction of the forest Environment problems in our city - Rubbish/ garbage/ trash - Smoke from cars, motorbikes,.. - Smoke from the factories, *Matching: Students work in pairs to match the words with the correct pictures Answers: -Picture a: air pollution -Picture d: water pollution -Picture b: spraying pesticides -Picture e: deforestation -Picture c: garbage dump -Picture f: dynamite fishing II. Pre-reading:(Getting started) 1. Pre - teach vocabulary - deforestation (n): nạn phá rừng (explanation) - garbage dump (n): bãi rác (picture) - dynamite fishing (n): đánh bắt cá bằng thuốc nổ (picture) - spraying pesticides (n): phun thuốc trừ sâu (picture) - disappointed (by/about/at) (adj): thất vọng (synonym) - sewage (n): rác thải (translation) * Check: What and where 2. Aims By the end of the lesson, students will be able to persuade their friends to protect the environment. They will know more about things which should be done to make the environment clean and clear. - Teaching aids: Text book, posters, pictures,.. - Lexical Items: prevent, reduce, wrap, faucet, leaf - Grammar: the structures of persuasion; the conditional sentence type I B. Procedure: I. Warm up: *Jumbled words: 1. uaderpse = persuade 4. lupotilon = pollution 2. beaargg = garbage 5. duproce = produce 3. roderpvi = provide 6. paispoidednt = disappointed II. Pre – speaking 1. Pre - teach vocabulary - prevent (v): ngăn cản, ngăn chặn (translation) - reduce (v): giảm (example) - wrap (v): gói (mime) - faucet (n): vòi nước (picture) - leaf (n): chiếc lá (realia) * Check: Slap the board. 2. Matching: - Ask students to complete the expressions in column A by using one of the lines in column B /p49 then compare with their partners. Then they will have sentences of persuasion. - Have the students read the sentences again. - Check: Form: I think you should Won’t you It would be better if you + INFINITIVE . While – speaking - Each student calls out one of the sentences until all the sentences are finished E.g: S1: I think you should use banana leaves to wrap food. S2: Why don’t we turn off the lights before going to bed? S3: It would be better if you go to school or go to work by bike. S4: Can I persuade you to check all the faucets before going out. - Questionnaire: Let students work in pairs to answer the questions in the questionnaire. Eg: 1.How can we save paper? *I think you should recycle used papers or newspapers. *Why don’t we use banana leaves for wrapping? * Won’t you write on both sides of the papers? 2.How can we use fewer plastic bags? * How about cleaning and reusing them * Why not use paper bags instead of plastic bags? 3.How can we reduce water pollution? *It would be better if you don not throw wastes and garbage into stream, lakes or rivers and even ocean? 4. How can we prevent littering? *I think we should put garbage bins around the school yard *Why don’t you throw all garbage in waste bin? 5. How can we reduce air pollution? *Can I persuade you to go to school by bike? *Why not use private vehicles less? IV. Further practice: Language Focus 4, 5 - Have Ss to copy the form and use of the conditional sentences type I If + S1 + V (present tense), S2 + will + V Example: If it rains, we will not go to the movies - Have Ss do language focus 4, 5 in groups of four - Call some Ss to write the answers on the board. - T corrects if necessary.
