Unit 10: COMMUNICATION
Lesson 4: Communication
A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- have a brief overview of ways of communication
- use lexical items related to communication breakdown (language barrier,cultural
difference, communication channel,shrug (shoulder), glance)
- get to know more about reasons for communication breakdown and understand more
abbreviations for chatting and texting online.
- talk about ways to avoid communication breakdown.
2. Competence: Communication, ability to use language (talk about ways to avoid
communication breakdown), Creative capacity (give technology solution that will help
people avoid the communication breakdown).
3. Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: listening and speaking
B. TEACHING AIDS: Ss’ books, textbook, projector, cards
C. PROCEDURES
* Warm up: Brainstorm
- T divides class into 2 teams: A-B
- In 2 mins : Ss from each team (one by one) write on the board
- T gives feedback and remarks

I. Pre-speaking:
1. Vocabulary
- Get students to do a matching exercise to revise the words.

2. Activity 2: Pre-question:
- T asks Ss to work in groups of five and answer the questions:
? What does Communication breakdown mean?
? How to avoid Communication breakdown?
- Ss give answers
- T explains more if necessary II. While-speaking:
1. Activity 1:Matching(the following possible reasons for communication breakdown
with the examples).
- Ss work in pairs
- Ss share the answer with other pairs.
- T asks Ss to give the answers.
- T and Ss check and correct.

- Then T asks Ss to work in pairs and add some more reason and examples
- Ss discuss and add more.
- T writes Ss’ answers on board.
2. Activity 2: Matching (Body language with the meaning)
- T asks one or two Ss to explain : “Body language”
- T helps Ss to understand “Body language”.
- T explains: “Body language” can help to avoid communication breakdown.
- T mimes and asks sts to guess what T is trying to say.
- Have Sswork in pairs: match the body language with the meanings.
- T and Ss check and correct.

3. Activity 3: Decoding abbreviations:
- Have Ss work in pairs, decode the abbreviations.
- Ss write their answers.
- Ss share.
- T and Ss check.

*Activity : Discussion
- T asks Ss to work in group.
- T asks Ss to make their group’s Ideas Bank by discussing a technology solution that will
help people avoid the communication breakdown mentioned in Ex.1.
- Have Ss present their ideas to share with the class to make a big Ideas Bank.
Example: Language Barrier
- We will use an app on a smart phone to automatically translate what we are saying
into the language of the listener.

Lesson 5: Skills 1
A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- read and get for specific information about the communication in the future
- talk about different ways of communication in the future then complete all exercises
given in the lesson.
2. Competence: Communication,self-learning ability, ability to use language, cooperation
capacity, creative capacity.
3.Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: Reading and speaking
B. TEACHING AIDS: Ss’ books, textbook, projector, cards
C. PROCEDURES:
* Warmer: Chatting.
- T asks. - Ss answer.
a. Do you like writing letters?
b. Do you like sending letters and receiving letters from other?
c. Do you like the feeling when you open letters from someone?
d. Do you usually write to anyone? Who?
e. How often do you write to him/ her?
I. Pre-reading: * Pre – question:
- T introduces: “ Students in a school in Ha Noi and students in a school in Sweden
have a penfriend project. They write to each other in this project.”
- T asks Ss to work in groups of four and answer the question:
? Why do you think they choose this way to communicate with each other?
- Ss give their answers – T write on the board.
- Have Ss look at the pictures in the text in 2 and ask.
? What do you think is happening in these photos?
- Ss can guess the answer
- Ss read the text to check their answers.
II. While-reading:
1. Activity 1: Matching: words or phrase words with its meaning:
- Have Ss work individually: read the text again and match.
- Ss share answer with their partner
- T and Ss check and correct.
* Keys:

2. Activity 2: Questions:
- Ss work in pairs: Read the text again and answer the questions
- T and Ss check and correct. Answer keys:
1. What do the students like about the pen friend project?
They love to write and read real letter. One student likes to send sweets with the letters
as well.
2. What are the two ways of future communication mentioned in the text?
Explain how they work.
They are telepathy and holography. Telepathy uses a device in our head to communicate
by thought over the network. Holography gives three-dimensional images and we will be
able to interact with each other in real time.
3. Do you think the writer is happy with this future of communication? How do you know?
She prefers to use real, face-to-face communication because she thinks this makes life
more interesting.
III. Post-reading: Speaking:
1. Activity 1: Discussion:
? Do you agree with the author of the text? Why? Why not?
- Ss work in groups: discuss the question.
- Ss share their ideas.
Example: - I agree with the author of the text. People should communicate in a
traditional way by meeting face to face although they get access to the new
technology. Life will always be real even if it is virtual.
- I disagree with the author because I see that sending e-mail or something
like that is much faster and more convenient.
2. Activity 2: Class survey
- T asks Ss go around the class and asks Ss (Each Ss has to ask 5 Ss)
- Then T gets 1-2 Ss to report their survey
? What kind of communication do you use for the following purposes now?
And what will they be in the year 2030?

- to listen for specific information about polite language online or “netiquette”
- write an email to the teacher about student’s work.
2. Competence: Communication,self-learning ability, ability to use language, cooperation
capacity, creative capacity.
3.Quality: hardworking, responsible and honest.
4. Skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing,
B. TEACHING AIDS: Ss’ books, textbook, projector, cards
C. PROCEDURES:
* Warmer: Chatting.
- T asks 2-3 Ss :
a. What type of communication do you often use?
(-> using codes/ using signs/ using body language/ sending flowers/ using music/ ...)
b. Do you usually use a computer for your communication? What for?
(-> Chatting/ sending video/ sending email/ writing letter/ )
I. Pre-listening:
1. Activity 1: Reading
- Have Ss look at the message board.
- Ss look and discuss in groups of four.
? Who posted this message?
? Who do you think the message is for?
? What is the message about?
? Is the message polite?
- Ss give answers
- T explains “caps lock”.
2. Activity 2: Questions
- T writes “Netiquette” on board.
- T asks Ss what it means.
- Ss answer.
- Have Ss read the three questions and think about the answers.
- Ss give answers- T takes notes on the board.
II. While-listening:
1. Activity 1: Listen and answer questions:
- Ss listen to the tapescript and check their answers.
- Ss answer the questions
- T and Ss check and correct.
* Keys:
1. What is “netiquette”?
The word is a combination of “net” and “etiquette”. It’s a set of rules for behaving
properly online. 2. What is the main rule of netiquette?
Don’t say and do unpleasant things online, just like in real life.
3. Besides the content of what we’re communicating, what should we pay attention to?
It’s how we communicate with each other online.
2. Activity 2:complete the following grid:
- Have Ss read the grid then listen again.
- Ss complete.
Should Shouldn’t Why/Why not?
1. Use CAPS LOCK in emails, It looks like you are shouting
posts, and comments √ at someone.
2. Check your email for It shows respect for your

III. Post-listening: Writing: Write an email using Netiquette:

- Have Ss read the REMEMBER! Box about notes of writing an email.
- T explains more if necessary.
1. Activity 1:Put the following parts in their correct place to make an email:
- Have Ss work in pairs.
- Ss share.
- T and Ss check and correct.

2. Activity 2: Write a short email to your teacher to submit your group
- Ss write individually.

Lesson 7: Looking back+ Project
A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- have a brief overview of communication form and communication technology.
- use the lexical items related to the topic “Communication”
- use the future continuous to express being in the process of doing
something at a specific time in the future, V + to-V.
- talk about communication now and in the future
2. Competence: Communication, Co- operation, Self – learning capacity, Creative
capacity
3. Quality: studious, responsible and honest.
4. Skills:speaking, writing and reading
5.Grammar points: the future continuous, V + to-V
B. TEACHING AIDS:

* Warmer: Revision.
- T helps Ss to revise the ways of communication.
- T divides class into 4 groups: write quickly ways of communication (in 30 seconds).
- Four groups write on the board.
