Lesson 2: A closer look 1
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know and use the lexical items
related to the topic “my home” and pronounce correctly the ending sounds /s/,
/z/, /iz/ in isolation and in context
- Grammar:
- Lexical items: hall, attic, microwave, chest of drawer, air-conditioner,
dishwasher, ceiling fan.
- Teaching aids: Posters, pictures, loudspeaker
B. Procedure:
I. Warm up: Brainstorming
Ss name the things used in the house: a sofa, a chair, a bed . . .
II. Vocabulary
+ a hall: phòng lớn, hội trường Things used in a house
+ an attic: gác mái
+ a microwave: lò viba, lò vi sóng
+ a chest of drawer: ngăn kéo tủ
+ an air-conditioner: máy điều hòa nhiệt độ
+ a dishwasher: máy rửa bát đĩa
+ a ceiling fan : quạt trần
* Checking: R.O.R
III. Practice
* Activity 1
- T has Ss match the rooms of the house with its name
KEY : a. living room b. bedroom c. attic
d. bathroom e. kitchen f. hall
* Activity 2 (pair work)
- T writes the name of the rooms on the board in different places. T calls on Ss
from different pairs to go to the board and write the name of the furniture under
these rooms
- T asks others Ss to comment and add more words to the list
KEY
Living room: lamp, sofa, picture, table
Bedroom: Bed, lamp, picture, chest of drawers
Kitchen: Fridge, cupboard, cooker, table, dishwasher, chair
Bathroom: Bath, sink, toilet
Hall: Picture
* Activity 3
- T plays the recording, Ss listen and repeat the words (Ss can add more words
to the list)

* Activity 4 (pair work)
- Ss asks and answer the questions to guess the rooms
- T models this activity with a student
- Ss work in pair
- T calls some pair to practice in front of the class
Example: A: What is in the room?
B: A sofa and a TV
A: Is it the living room?
B: Yes
IV. PRONUNCIATION: /s/, /z/, /iz/
* Activity 5
- T asks some Ss to read out the words first, then plays the recording for them to
listen and repeat the words
* Activity 6 (p19)
- T asks Ss to put the word in the correct columns while they listen
- Ss compare their answers in pairs before T checks their answers with the whole
class

- T has Ss comment on the way to pronounce -S /-ES at the end of the words
- T explains the rules
+ /z/: Final “-s” is pronounced /z/ after voiced sounds (b, d, g, h, m, l..) and any
vowel sounds.
Ex: beds, dogs, cans, rooms
+ /s/: Final “-s” is pronounced /s/ after voiceless sounds (/t, p, k, f, θ/)
EX: cats. lamps, books, months
+ /iz/: Final “-es” is pronounced /iz/ after (s, z, ∫, t∫, dʒ, ʒ)
EX: buses, houses, watches, pages
- T asks Ss to give more examples
Activity 7: (Exercise7 / P 19)
T asks Ss to read the conversation and underline the final s/ es in the words and
write /s/ /z/ /iz/ (individually)

Lesson 3: A closer look 2
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to use “there is/isn’t, there are/aren’t”
correctly and appropriately
- Grammar: there is, there isn’t, there are, there aren’t”
- Teaching aids: Posters, pictures.
B. Procedure
I. Warm up: Chain game ( Ss tell what rooms their house has )
S1: My house has a living room
S2: My house has a living room and a dining room
S3: My house has a living room, a dining room and a bathroom
II. Presentation
T asks Ss to look at the two pictures of the two rooms and asks them what the
first room has and what the 2nd room does not have
- T writes Ss’ answers on the board, at the same time asks Ss to use the “there is,
there isn’t , there are , there aren’t” structure to make sentences
There’s (is) a picture on the wall
There are two lamps in the room
- T checks the meaning, use and form of the structure
a. Meaning
b. Use: Dùng để diễn tả sự tồn tại một/nhiều vật/ người ở nơi nào đó
c. Form:
- Affirmative:
There is + a/an/one + singular noun
There is + uncountable noun
There are + plural noun
- Negative:
There is not ( isn’t ) + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are not (aren’t) + plural noun
- Questions and short answers
Is there a . . . ? Yes, there is / No there isn’t
Are there + . . . ? Yes, there are / No , there aren’t
III. Practice

- Ss write the sentences individually then go to the board to write their sentences
- Other Ss and T feedbacks (all the sentences are accepted if they make sense)

- T asks Ss to look at the picture and complete the description
- Ss compare their answers, then give teacher their answers
- T confirms the correct answers

Lesson 4: Communication
A. Aims
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to describe a house by using the
grammar points “there is / there are” and prepositions of place
- Teaching aids: Posters, pictures.
B. Procedure
I. Warm up: Chain game ( Ss describe their classroom )
S1: There are two windows in our classroom
S2: There are two windows and a door in our classroom
S3: There are two windows, a door and a board in our classroom
S4: . . .
II. Extra vocabulary
- T asks Ss to look at the picture and describe the houses - T asks Ss to give the
Vietnamese equivalents of the words: town house, country house, villa, stilt
house, apartment.
III. Practice
* Activity 1 (pair work)
- Ss look at the picture of Mi’s grandparents’ house and complete the sentences
KEY:

* Activity 2
- T explains the way to do the activity
- T models the way to do this with a student
Ex: T: Nick lives in a country house. Where does Mi live?
S: She lives in a town house
T: How many rooms are there in Mi’s house?

S: There are six. What about Nick’s house? How many rooms are there?
- T asks Ss to make similar conversations, Ss should note down the differences
between the two houses. After some minutes, the pair which has the most
differences will be the winner
- T asks some pairs to act out the conversation
- Other pairs listen and add more differences if there are any
* Activity 3
- T asks Ss to draw a simple plan of their houses, then work in pairs to tell each
other about their houses
IV. Homework
