UNIT 4: FESTIVALS AND FREE TIME
Lesson 1.3: Pronunciation and Speaking
A. Objectives
1. Knowledge
- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
- Know how to stress the adverbs for emphasis.
- Get used to the adverbs of frequency
- Ask and answer questions to find out their “spirit animal”
2. Ability
- Ss can improve their 2 skills : Listening and Speaking
- Ss can develop the ability to communicate and cooperate with their partners, to self-
study, to solve problems in conversation situations.
- Ss can talk about their free time activities
3. Quality
- Ss have positive attitude in English language learning so that they actively participate
in all classroom activities, especially with the topic “Free time” conducted by the
teacher.
- Ss can take part in useful activities in their free time
B. Teaching aids
- Lesson plan, PPT slides, student’s book, workbook, notebook, personal computer (if
any), projector/TV, speakers, DCR & DHA on Eduhome, handouts
C. Procedures
I. Warm up: SONG: Adverbs of frequency
- Let Ss listen to the song about “Adverbs of frequency”. Ss can sing together while
the song is being played. (T doesn’t need to play all song)
- Have Ss listen to the song and try to remember the adverbs of frequency they can
hear.
- Have Ss give answers

II. Pre-speaking
1. Pronunciation
a + b. Listen to the sentences and focus on the stress of the adverbs
- Play the recording (CD1, track 45)
- Ask Ss to listen and pay attention to the stress of the adverbs
- Call Ss to make their comments on how the adverbs are stressed and where the
adverbs of frequency are stressed
- Give feedback, explain the pronunciation feature: In speaking, we often stress the
adverbs for emphasis/They are stressed at the first sound
- Play the recording again, have Ss listen and repeat with a focus on the pronunciation
feature
c + d. Listen and cross out the one with the wrong stress, then read the sentences
with the correct sentence stress to a partner

- Play the recording, have Ss listen and cross out the option that doesn’t use the correct
stress
- Call Ss to give answers
- Play the recording again and check answers as a whole class
- Then have Ss practice saying the sentences with a partner, using the correct stress,
encourage Ss to make up their own sentences -using adverbs of frequency – and put
stress on the adverbs
- Call some pairs to read in front of the class.
- Give feedback, correct Ss’ pronunciation if necessary
2. Set the scene
- T gets sts to look at the picture and sets the scene to get Ss familiar with the situation.
- T makes some questions related to the content of the dialogue:
- How many pictures are there?
- What are they doing ?
- T tells sts that they are going to make a dialogue about “what they always /usually/...
do in their free time”

- Emphasize the structure used to ask about frequency:
How often do you ?
Form: How often do you + V + O ?
S + adverb of frequency + V + O
S + V + O + in the morning/ on the weekend.....
Usage: - We use adverbs of frequency to talk about how often we take part in activities
in our free time
- Demonstrate the activity by asking and answering with a student
- Have Ss work in pairs to ask and answer, using the pictures and the time phrase
- Have some pairs demonstrate the activity in front of the class
- Give feedback and evaluation
Activity 2: Speaking
- T asks Ss to do a quiz about their free time activities to find out their “spirit animal”.
- Demonstrate the activity by asking and answering the first question with a student
- Ss work in pair to add three more activities and then ask their friend to complete the
quiz .

- Have pairs take turns to ask the quiz questions and add up the points
- T goes around and provides help if neccessary.
- Then T asks Ss to turn to page 125, file 13 to find out what their partner’s “spirit
animal” is. Share with the class.
- Have some Ss share their findings with the class
- Give feedback and evaluation
IV. Post-speaking
Free- speaking
- T gets 4 volunteered sts ( weaker students ) to come to the board
- One by one talks about their free time activities ( using adverbs of frequency)
Ex : I usually watch cartoon , some times play soccer. I help my mom do housework
on Sunday morning and visit my grandma on Saturday afternoon.
- Classmates give up the points and find out their “ spirit animal”
V. Homework
- Teacher guides Ss to have a look back on the lesson at home, do exercises in
workbook and get ready for the next lesson.
- Practice the Stress on the adverbs for emphasis.
- Review the structures used to ask and answer about frequency.
- Do exercises in WB: Writing, page 21.
- Prepare: Lesson 2 – New Words and Reading (page 33 – SB).

Lesson 2.1: New Words + Reading
A. Objectives
1. Knowledge
- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ know some activities in each festivals or in free time.
+ talk about future events.
2. Ability
- Students can supplement their vocabulary about activities and improve reading skill
for information.
- Students can develop the ability to communicate and cooperate with their partners, to
self-study, to solve problems in conversation situations.
- Students can distinguish the difference among places like cities, towns and villages.
3. Quality
- Students have positive attitude in English language learning so that they actively
participate in all classroom activities.
B. Teaching aids
- Lesson plan, PPT slides, Student’s book, workbook, ebook, personal computer (if
any), projector/TV.
C. Procedures
I. Warm-up: Chatting
Teacher asks Ss some questions:
+ What do you often do at the weekends?
+ What do you like to do on Saturdays?
+ On the weekends, do you prefer watching movies to going to music show?
+ What do you and your friends do together?
II. Pre- reading
Activity 1: Pre-teach new words
- Use pictures or videos to introduce the new words:
New words:
Performance (n); ( video)
Food stand (n) ; ( visual)
Puppet show (n) ; ( video)
Tug of war (n);( explanation)
Fashion show(n); (visual)
Talent show (n); (visual)
- Have students listen and repeat each new word. (chorally individually)
- Correct student’s pronunciation if necessary.
- Teacher checks Ss’ vocabulary.
* Checking new word: Number the pictures (exercise a/p.33)
- Have students number the pictures
- T tells Ss to do the task individually.
- Divide the class into pairs and have them check their answers with their partners.
- Check answers as a whole class.

Activity 3: Reading
- Teacher shows the dialogue, sets the scene of the dialogue.
- Students read the dialogue individually.
Activity 4: Game: Lucky numbers to answer the questions.
- Teacher gives instruction: There are 8 numbers with 3 lucky numbers. The class is
divided into 4 groups, 4 members of each group will choose the numbers for their
team. Each group will have 1 point for each correct answer, and 2 points for choosing
the lucky number
Answer:

IV. Post - reading
Activity 4
Option 1: Role play
- Have Ss practice in pairs, role play the conversation.
- Have students ask and answer.
- Some pairs present in front of the class.
- Teacher checks spelling and gives feedback.
Option 2: Making arrangement.
* Situation: You are calling to one of your friend and ask her to join a festival this
weekend.
- Pair work.
V. Homework
- Write more adjectives to talk about festival activities.
- Prepare new lesson.

Lesson 2.2: Grammar
A. Objectives
1. Knowledge
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Students will be able to use adverbs of frequency to talk about how often we
do things or how often things happen.
- Using structure: “How often + Auxiliary verb + Subject + Verb?” to talk
about how often things happen
2. Ability
- Students can improve their grammar in use.
- Students can develop their communication skill, creativity, cooperation, self-
studying and problem solving.
3. Quality
- Students have positive attitude in English language learning to participate in all
classroom activities with the topic “Festivals and free time”
B. Teaching aids
- Student’s book and teacher’s book, class CDs, flashcards, projector.
C. Procedures
I. Warm up: Network
- Have ss to write down freetime activities that they have known

- Teacher shows the conversation on the board.
- Teacher explains the structure with “How often

reminds Ss that “do/ does” are the forms of “Auxiliary verbs”.

- Ask Ss to give examples to make sure they catch the point.
III. Practice
1. Listen & repeat (a/p. 31)
- T introduces the situation of the dialogue.
- Have students listen and notice the pronunciation feature.
- Play audio again. Have students listen and repeat with a focus on the feature.
- T calls on Ss to repeat before the class
- Give feedback
2. Play the game: Noughts and crosses
- Have students use the cues given to make meaningful sentences by playing
the game noughts and crosses
- Teacher divides the class into two teams: A and B.
- Ask students use any subject they like to make sentences.

1. Interview
- T gives Ss the handouts and ask them to go around the class and ask 3
friends.
- Ask ss to use “How often” structure
- Write the activity if he/she mentions to which adverb of frequency
