I. OBJECTIVES:

1. Organization:
- Greetings and checking student’s attendance.
2. Checking the old lesson:
- T calls some Ss to go to the board and write the new words and structure
3. New lesson:
Activity 1: Warm - up:
* Play a game: Head and tail
- T gives suggested answers: Cave – end – date – eat – three .
Activity 2: Acquire new skills and knowledge.
* Pre-Reading:
Read these postcards from Mrs. Quyen to her children.
+ New words:
- lava (n) (translation)
- pour out (v) (explanation)
- volcano (n) (translation)
- fly –flew (v-vpast) (translation)
- situate (v) (explanation)
- shore (n) (translation)
- T reads model the new words
- T asks Ss to repeat
+ Checking technique: Rub out and remember
* Grammar: + Past progressive tense with when, while
Example: The lava was pouring out when we flew overhead.
Yesterday, while Dad was visiting the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building.
Activity 3: Practice
* While-Reading:
- T asks Ss to read the postcards
Exercise 1: Write what Mrs. Quyen did and saw in each of these places.
Exercise 2: Answer the following questions. (Ss do not work sentences b and c)
- T asks Ss to work in pairs
- T calls on some pairs to practice before class
- T gives correct answers:
a. She went there by plane.
d. It is also called “the Windy City”.
e. She went shopping.
Activity 4: Further practice
* Post – speaking and reading
- T correct Ss' errors
- T gives general comments
Activity 5: Expanding, supplementing, developing creative ideas.
- T summarizes the main points.
V. INTRUCTION FOR NEXT LESSON PREPARATION
- Learn by heart the new words and grammar.
